Leo

Update on Leo(September 5) He is a happy chunky boy. He loves to play with his friends and runs crazily around the yard barking joyfully. He is a smart boy that loves pets (once he gets to know you) and loves to eat.Leo and PixelLeo

Sweet Leo.  He came from a situation where his owner could no longer care for him or his kennel mates.  Most of the dogs were in pretty good condition but Leo had terrible teeth and was very thin.  Thanks to the Shelter Fund, Leo was given a full vet check and it was determined that his teeth were in such horrid condition that they should all be pulled.  So he had surgery and from what the vet said, even the bone was disintegrated.  Poor guy.  To have lived like that for many years with the pain and discomfort just makes my heart go out to him all the more.  They left a couple of opposing teeth (and that helps to keep his tongue in his mouth!)

He also had patches of skin that looked rubbed off.  It turned out that he had a body full of lice.  Geesh!  Did this dog get any breaks in life?  So he was treated with Ivermectin and back to the borough shelter he went.  Next thing I hear is that he had 2 seizures at the shelter.  OK, that’s it….Don?  Yes!  We went and brought Leo home.  He has been in a separate pen until we are sure he is lice free.  We had a fun time taking him to the Dawg Wash here in Fairbanks.  They have large tubs that have sprayers, shampoo, grooming equipment and lots of towels.  Don and I put on the plastic aprons and went to work.  Lots of special shampoo that the vet had given us kept him soaped up.  Other than the initial spray down he really liked being scrubbed all over.  There were many patches of lice that we dug off his skin.  We used different grooming tools including fine toothed combs.  A nice rinse and a brisk towel dry and he was ready to come home.

The last couple of days we have been letting him meet more of our dogs.  We haven’t seen him scratching at all and are just finding dead patches of lice….so hopefully none of our dogs will start the lice birth process all over again.  Luckily lice usually don’t attach themselves to clean healthy dogs…..

He liked Pixel although I think he thought she played a bit too hard.

So, Leo is in foster care through the shelter for now.  He has another check up this Thursday but the way he is eating and acting I think it will go well.  He is a sweet and happy boy and having no more pain.  We can only hope the rest of his life is much better than the last several years that he had to endure.

Jin

Jin has been adopted!

Update June 18th.  Gin is outside in the dog yard.  He is pretty wild on the chain but I think he is just frustrated with being pent up and not getting exercise.  A couple of volunteers and I took him to a back pet and let him run.  He loved chasing and fetching the kong.  He caught on very quickly to bring it to me so I could throw it for him.  He would make a great running buddy!

Jin is a dog that was dropped off in the afterhour cages late at night with NO information.  (The shelter gives all these dogs names) So we have to start from scratch with him.  It is my one huge request of people that turn dogs in….even if you don’t want people to know who you are, at least leave some information about the dog…..it is the best chance for adoption.  Jin is a young boy.  Probably a yearling.  He has pearly white, clean teeth!  He is a pointer mix with a pretty good coat.  He is sweet and gentle.

He loves to run.  He pulled good and has a great attitude.  My guess is he was turned in from a sprint team that he was too slow for.  But he certainly has good speed for a mid distance or a skijor team!  He would make a great pet as he is gentle and would bond strongly with you.

Jin is inside at the shelter.

Pixel’s pitch

Pixel has the most unusual voice.  When Sara came to visit the other day she asked in amazement “what is THAT?”  THAT is Ms. Pixel and her lovely voice.  She has the highest pitched yowl of any of our dogs.  Very high pitched.  An operatic singer would be jealous of her high octave C.  And she can hold it a long time.  ya ya ya yowwwlllllllll.  She also snores, yips, yodels and whines.  Now if I could only translate it all.

Pixel on a free run

Today I took 4 dogs on a free run on our lower trails.  It was a warm day in the 40′s with lots of sun.  I started out with Pixel on a leash and Misty, Ivy and Loon running free.  Those 3 are dogs that usually always go with us on dog walks because they are so trustworthy.  On our trails below we often see bikers, runners, mushers, skijorers and sometimes moose!  Usually if we go through the week we don’t see too many people so I like to get out in the middle of the day and not on a weekend.

Pixel was wild and ready to go.  At the bottom of the road where we cut off down the trail I just dropped her leash and let her run.  The dogs were still a bit wild at that point and there are several turns to different paths.  Loon, Misty and Pixel headed one way and it wasn’t the way that I wanted to go.  Pixel has never free run before so she was just wild with excitement.  It took a few minutes for the dogs to come back so I decided to keep her on the leash until the group got more tired.  So we did a 2 mile loop.  When we got closer to home I let her go and put Misty on the leash.  Misty is great walking on a leash and she had all her initial energy out of her.  But…Misty is also one that sometimes has a mind of her own and goes exploring.  She never goes too far but I didn’t want her to train Pixel any bad walking habits.

Pixel was great the rest of the way home.  She often would run back to me to make sure I was still coming along.  Loon and Ivy made great walking pals for her because they respond quickly to calls and don’t run off too far.  Once on the road I let Misty loose again so all 4 ran up and down the road (rarely any traffic on our little dirt lane!) all the way home.

It was a delight to see and knowing how young Pixel is and that she will continually need a lot of exercise to keep her happy, I’m confident that she will join a small group of free running dogs.

Leo

Update February 20th. Leo is thriving. He loves to skijor. He will run lead or swing. He is a robust boy that still has some years left. He is a fun dog to have around.

Update January 25th. Leo is such a ham. A super happy guy that loves to eat, run, play and be warm. At first he wasn’t sure about going in the dog barn when it got cold. But OH!! Once he realized he could sleep where it was nice and warm we now have a hard time keeping him out for his exercise time. He has come a long way, comes when called, loves pets and treats and is a true joy.
This picture was shortly after we got him. He has filled out and has a nice shiny brown coat. I will take new pictures soon.

Update September 9th. We love this boy. He is a happy go lucky guy that loves to play with other dogs. He also LOVES to eat. We have to be careful with his weight for he could really get fat if we aren’t careful. He has had no problems with his health and even eats pieces of kibble happily swallowing them all at once (we keep them small!) even without most of his teeth.

Update May 14th.  Leo is doing great.  He spends quite a bit of time in the house but loves laying outside in the sun.  His coat is beautiful and he is gaining weight.  He loves other dogs and plays happily.  He is a super nice all around older dog that wins your heart with his perseverance.

Update April 23.  Leo is doing great in his foster home.  He is still dealing with his lice problem but looks like he has them licked.  He hasn’t had any seizures since being in foster care so that is a good sign.  He is eating great and because he still has some opposing teeth (2 on the top and 5 on the bottom) he has no problem keeping his tongue in his mouth.  He got a check up on Thursday and his mouth is healing quite nicely.  He had a lot of ulceration from his dental disease and that is healing up although he will always have some scaring.

He is getting another good bath on Saturday to get rid of the last patches of lice.  His coat is lovely and he is continuing to thrive.

Update April 14  Leo is in foster care now.  He had lice and had a couple of seizures which we are hoping are just related to his poor condition and stress of surgery.  He is a dear sweet boy that is loving the food and attention he is getting.

Update April 12, 2011.  Leo had most of his teeth pulled almost a week ago.  When I saw him at the shelter today he was a different dog!  Happy and very young looking.  This poor boy was in so much pain it was making him look like a 14 year old dog.  I’m not sure of his age.  He isn’t young, but he isn’t super old.  He wants to retire at your feet and take long walks and eat canned dog food!

(first post April 6)Leo is an older neutered male that had horrid dental problems.  Well, those dental problems were fixed today with major work on his terribly painful and infection filled mouth.  He should feel great in a few days.  Leo would love a home where he can retire in style and go for long walks by your side.  He is a very sweet and gentle boy that deserves a painfree rest of his life.  He loves to ride in the car and is quiet and watches the sights go by.
