Weights go up

Onyx has had a severely hard couple of months. She was doing well for about a year, then just crashed. Went from 42 pounds down to 33. We put her on a new drug over a week ago. Cyclosporin We have tried many things in the past and think they work well, and then she goes down again. At the moment she is tolerating the drug well (no vomiting!) and her weight is back up to 37.2 pounds. She still has splats but they are less and less looking like liquid. Here’s hoping that this will be the “miracle” drug for her.

In the meantime, Bonsai is thriving. He is up to 28 pounds. Still quite tiny for his age (probably around 7 months old now) but full of energy and no lasting side effects from his surgery. He is still being fed elevated although he seems to be able to get things down (like frozen turds–isn’t THAT lovely!) and not regurgitate them back up. He loves life and playing and is obsessed with his ball.

Presents

Bonsai has claimed the newest holiday present from Don. An elevated dog bed. He loves it.

Merry Holidays

Hoping everyone is having a wonderful holiday season. Mardy says “these are all MY toys.”(and at 13.5 years old she can have anything she wants) Hope you have shared with loved ones in your lives and enjoying this time of the year. I realize how very fortunate that I am with love, shelter and food for myself, Don and the dogs.

Can we have new toys?

Bonsai at Cold Spot Feeds

Bonsai was at Cold Spot Feeds on Sunday the 18th. We had fun introducing him to people and having them sample our delicious chocolates. It wasn’t super busy but we had a fair number of people talk with us and give donations for the Fairbanks Animal Shelter Fund.

Bonsai also has a good ear for music. We were treated to Christmas music by a young man trying to earn money to go to the Arctic Winter Games.

Dish washer

“I can certainly clean the dishes better than this dishwasher…”

Is this healthy?

Star is a true survivor…..how long can she live on what she is eating? Lately, she has been living on vanilla wafers and ice cream. Today she did eat some soy crumbles that I had made into “sloppy joes” but she has eaten very little else. She is getting thinner…..is she ready to die? I know I’m not ready to make that decision. Her joy of lapping up ice cream keeps me going and smiling…but I know that her body is failing and time is probably near. sigh.

Star’s eats

The girl is still living! Amazes me. She is such a survivor. She will not eat for a few days and I think “this is the end..” then she perks back up and eats a lot. Yesterday and today she has eaten quite well.
Today she drank part of her morning broth and ate some kibble. For lunch I had made a tuna melt. I took one bite….she looked interested, so I fed her the rest of the sandwich. She is loving pie crust so I ate the pumpkin out of a pumpkin pie and fed the crust to Star. In a little while I will see if she wants her nightly ice cream.
